If you are the defendant in divorce proceedings, here are some helpful tips when going through the first steps of divorce. Initially, South Carolina Legal Services, on their LawHelp page, offers a PDF with instructions on how the matters will proceed. This includes, your duties as a defendant in the hearing, forms to fill out and how to proceed with the paperwork, and how the hearing will go as well as how you should approach the hearing. As well, SC Legal offers an automated self-interview to make sure that you qualify as well as help you move along with forms. Again, similarly to the “Plaintiff First Steps in Divorce” classroom, the self-interview will ensure that there are no matters needed to be adjudicated (have the judge make a ruling). This includes: finances, debts, children, shared property, etc…. Below you should find the PDF for the self-help instructions and the link for the self-automated interview.
