The first step is to fill out the court forms. You can get them online (www.jud.ct.gov), or pick them up at the court. You may be asked to fill out more forms, and if so, you can get help from the court service center at the court, or call Statewide Legal Services if you have very low income. Here are the forms you will need to fill out:
This form is used to tell the court what changes you want to make to the order.
This form tells the court that you do not have an attorney. It also gives the court your mailing address. Visit the CT Judicial Branch website to learn how to fill out an Appearance form.
This form is used to show how much money you have and how you spend it. It is very important in deciding child support. If you have a job or are getting money any other way, you should bring proof of this and include it with your financial affidavit. Do not sign this form until you are in front of the clerk at the court. See the CT Judicial Branch's slidecast on how to fill out a Financial Affidavit.
This form tells the court where your child has lived and if there are other court cases about your child.
If you cannot afford to pay court costs and fees, you can fill out a fee waiver form asking the court to allow you to skip them. This slideshow on CTLawHelp.org can help you with filling out a fee waiver form. It will probably be helpful to have a copy of the form in front of you so you can fill it out while you watch the slideshow. Also see the CT Judicial Branch's slidecast on filling out a fee waiver application. If the court denies your fee waiver, call Statewide Legal Services for help. Statewide Legal Services will not pay the fees for you, but they can explain how to ask the court again for a fee waiver.
